GFF 2026 Showed Where AI Agents in Banking Actually Live: Inside the App

At GFF 2026, agentic AI moved from keynote slides into live banking and NBFC apps. Here is what Pine Labs, L&T Finance, Indian Bank, and NPCI actually launched.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIPGFF 2026 Showed Where AIAgents in Banking Actually…

Global Fintech Fest 2026, held in Mumbai from September 8 to 11, made agentic AI one of its three official themes alongside tokenisation and quantum. The more important signal was not the theme. It was where the agents showed up. Across the biggest launches of the week, the AI agent was not a separate product customers had to go and find. It was built into an app customers already use: an NBFC's lending app, a public sector bank's mobile banking experience, a payments wallet. Banking apps are not disappearing, they are becoming agents, and GFF 2026 was the first time India's financial industry demonstrated that at scale on one stage.

What Did GFF 2026 Say About Agentic AI in Banking?

GFF 2026 positioned agentic AI as the next layer of India's financial infrastructure, and the launches placed that layer inside existing financial apps. Opening the festival on September 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said technologies like agentic AI, tokenisation and quantum are opening new possibilities in the financial sector, and framed the challenge ahead as converting those possibilities into real impact. The rest of the week answered how: by embedding agents into journeys customers already complete inside their banking and payment apps, with consent, limits, and audit trails attached.

L&T Finance and Pine Labs: An Agent That Transacts Inside the PLANET App

The clearest example of an app becoming an agent came from L&T Finance, one of India's largest NBFCs, which announced on September 9 that it would integrate Pine Labs' Agentic Storefront into the L&T Finance PLANET App. The first use case is flight ticket booking: an AI agent finds the ticket and completes payment through the UPI functionality already inside the PLANET App, using the Pine Labs Payments Protocol, with Pine Labs Grantex handling authorisation delegation, spend controls, and auditability.

Sanjeev Kumar, Chief Technology Officer at Pine Labs, described the shift directly: "We are entering a new era where commerce is increasingly driven by intent rather than clicks, searches, and manual decisions." Manish Kumar Gupta, Chief Executive, Urban Unsecured Assets, Payments and Digital Partnerships at L&T Finance, positioned it as a continuation of the app's purpose: "Our endeavor at L&T Finance has always been to leverage cutting-edge digital innovations to simplify financial and lifestyle journeys for our customers." The customer did not leave the PLANET App to use an agent. The agent arrived inside it.

Indian Bank's AI-TARA: Voice Agents for Customers Who Find Menus Hard

Indian Bank unveiled AI-TARA (Trusted AI Relationship Assistant) at GFF 2026 on September 10, a conversational voice banking service that lets customers complete selected tasks such as fund transfers, IMPS payments, and fixed deposit creation by speaking, in 10 languages. Binod Kumar, MD and CEO of Indian Bank, explained who it is for: "Our voice banking solution, 'AI-TARA', is aimed at bringing senior citizens and customers with limited digital expertise who may face challenges in navigating conventional banking applications into the digital banking ecosystem."

That sentence is the entire case for agentic banking apps in one line. The problem was never that customers lacked a banking app. It was that the app's menus, nested screens, and forms asked too much of them. A conversational agent that completes an FD booking in Tamil or Bengali does not make the bank's digital channel less important. It makes it usable by millions of customers who were previously locked out of it.

Amazon Pay and NPCI: Consent and Control Stay Inside the App

Amazon Pay launched Smart Wallet at GFF 2026, which lets AI agents make UPI payments on a customer's behalf, starting with flight bookings through ixigo in partnership with NPCI. The setup lives inside the Amazon Pay app: customers go to the UPI Manage page, choose which agent to authorise, and set monthly limits, per-transaction limits, and merchant-level consent. Girish Krishnan, Director of Payments, Rewards and Merchant Services at Amazon Pay India, called the wallet "the foundation which can work across different merchants once you consent."

NPCI's own position, stated from the GFF stage, drew the governance line the whole industry will now build around. Ajay Kumar Choudhary, Non-executive Chairman of NPCI, said on September 10: "Decision making and execution must remain separate. AI may recommend, but authentication and final settlement must follow deterministic auditable rules." In practice, that authentication and those rules sit in the authenticated app session, which is exactly why the app becomes more central, not less, as agents take on more work.

Why the Agent Lands Inside the App, Not Outside It

Every serious GFF 2026 launch converged on the same architecture for the same three reasons, and they apply to any bank or NBFC planning its own agent.

  • Identity and authentication already live in the app. The customer is logged in, device-bound, and verified. An agent operating in that session inherits trust that an external agent has to rebuild from zero.
  • Consent needs a screen. Limits, merchant permissions, and revocation are set and reviewed by the customer somewhere visible. Amazon Pay's UPI Manage page and Pine Labs' Grantex layer both put that control inside the app.
  • Regulators want an audit trail tied to a regulated entity. NPCI's separation of recommendation from execution maps naturally onto an in-app agent that proposes, a customer who confirms on screen, and a bank system that settles.

Nandan Nilekani added a longer-range view at GFF 2026, describing how AI agents could transact on a small business's behalf, for example by converting an invoice into a token and matching it with lenders. That future also runs through a trusted financial app: the agent needs an account, a mandate, and a regulated counterparty to act on anyone's behalf.

What BFSI Product Leaders Should Take From GFF 2026

The lesson for a bank, NBFC, or insurer is not "launch an agent." It is "decide which journeys inside your app your agent will own, before a partner or platform defines that for you." Three practical moves follow:

  • Pick one transactional journey, not a FAQ. L&T Finance started with flight booking, Indian Bank with transfers and FDs. A narrow journey with a clear completion metric beats a broad assistant that only answers questions.
  • Design consent and limits as product features. Customers should be able to see, adjust, and revoke what the agent is allowed to do, in the same app, in two taps.
  • Separate recommendation from execution in your architecture now. It is the principle NPCI's chairman stated publicly, and it is the one supervisors are most likely to look for.

RevRag AI builds in-app AI agents for BFSI apps on exactly this pattern: agents that see the customer's journey state, act within the app's own permissions, and leave an auditable record of every step.

A Prediction for GFF 2027

Here is a specific, falsifiable call: at GFF 2027, at least five Indian banks or NBFCs will demonstrate an in-app agent completing a regulated financial transaction end to end inside their own app (a loan disbursal, an FD booking, a card EMI conversion, or an insurance renewal), compared with a handful of first movers at GFF 2026. None of the leading institutions will launch a standalone agent app. Every one of them will put the agent inside the app their customers already open every day.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Agents at GFF 2026

What were the main agentic AI launches at GFF 2026?

Major agentic AI launches at GFF 2026 included L&T Finance and Pine Labs bringing agentic commerce to the L&T Finance PLANET App, Amazon Pay's Smart Wallet for agent-initiated UPI payments, Indian Bank's AI-TARA voice banking assistant, NPCI's AiNxt agentic AI platform, BharatPe's agentic AI platform for merchants, and Perfios' showcase of AI agents for financial services.

When and where was Global Fintech Fest 2026 held?

Global Fintech Fest 2026, the seventh edition, was held from September 8 to 11, 2026, at the Jio World Centre and Trident, Bandra Kurla Complex, in Mumbai. Its official focus areas were agentic AI, tokenisation, and quantum technology.

What did NPCI say about AI agents and UPI at GFF 2026?

NPCI's Non-executive Chairman Ajay Kumar Choudhary said decision making and execution must remain separate, and that AI may recommend but authentication and final settlement must follow deterministic, auditable rules. This sets the governance principle for agentic payments on UPI.

Are AI agents in Indian banking apps live or still pilots?

Both. Amazon Pay's agentic UPI payments went live at GFF 2026 on a narrow first use case, flight booking through ixigo, and L&T Finance announced the same use case for its PLANET App, while broader agentic banking journeys are still being piloted under NPCI and RBI governance frameworks.
